Is a new dog or puppy coming into the family? PDF Print E-mail
  • Everyone should meet the dog before bringing him home
  • Talk about his basic needs
  • How will he fit in to the family routine?
  • Dogs need basic rules and guidelines - just as we do
  • We should respect our pet's own space and rest time
  • Your new dog may need to attend local training classes
  • He will need at least 2 walks every day

Responsibilities of ownership

  • We all need to understand the needs of the dog as an animal and not a toy.
  • We all need our personal space and your dog is no exception.
  • Give your dog a chance to calm down and rest following a play and exercise session.
  • Provide a comfy bed and plenty of fresh drinking water.
  • A dog should always be allowed to approach children in his own time.
  • Not all dogs enjoy being touched by strangers and children should ALWAYS ask an owner first.

Choosing the right dog

  • Try not to be swayed by how cute the dog looks - I know it's not easy!
  • Research the breed characteristics to discover if your energy levels can cope, or talk to a training and behaviour expert for their considered advice.
  • Decide how much time you have to attend to all your dog’s needs.
  • Talk to your vet about possible health issues in certain breeds.
  • Can your vet recommend a good dog training instructor?
